Living by faith and not by sight

We are living in exciting times. The recent changes in the political landscape have provided a different picture, with much emphasis on the financial difficulties ahead and the need for cutbacks in the nation’s finances. On the domestic front, belt-tightening would appear to be likely, with many challenges ahead for people on limited incomes or coping with large mortgages. The moral implications of these and other contemporary situations present big issues for us all.

So as we are entering into a significant new phase in the life of New Life Baptist, how should we be facing this together? Please let me offer you some encouraging Bible passages that will help us in this process.

Psalm 9 verse 10 says, “Those who know your name will trust in you, for you O Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you”. Psalm 37 verses 3 and 4 state, “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart”, and Psalm 52 verse 8 adds, “But I am like and olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love forever”. These verses indicate that we need to put our faith in God and trust Him to be our provider.

I believe that alongside being faithful we need to be practical. The Parable of the Talents, recorded in Matthew chapter 25, suggests that positive faith is needed in our daily living. We trust God to help us in our daily life, as we submit our gifts and abilities to Him.

Finally, the writer of Hebrews makes strong reference about faith. The well-know verse at the start of Chapter 11 – “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” – challenges us with regard to trusting God when facing big matters.

Relating this to the Centre, for myself I am making sure that I look beyond the building (and praise the Lord for His wonderful provision!) to believing that God will lead us onwards in the next steps. These are more difficult, as we cannot be sure what we will have to face as we prepare the Centre for occupation. But I am confident that God will make the way plain. We continue to be the people who know this: “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their heart on pilgrimage …O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you” (Psalm 84.5, 12).

A final point – we have the example of our leaders to emulate. Hebrews 13.7 encourages, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith”.

Whatever the future has in store, we can be sure of this: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13.8) – what an encouragement to us to live by faith and not by sight!
